Over past several ten years, low-grade finely distributed iron ore deposits have been dominant sources of raw iron ore material worldwide. New technologies must be developed for iron ore washing with big working capacity, especially when dealing with very fine materials. Magnetic separation and flotation are the most commonly used method for separating fine iron ore particles, but the iron concentrates processed by both method are of high amounts of very fine materials and impurities such as silica particles. Gravity separation is a common beneficiation method applied to iron industry, but the separation efficiency becomes a big problem with finely disseminated materials in the iron ore.

Iron ore washing plant plays an important role in iron ore beneficiation process. In this process, part of the fine gangue material is removed from the iron ore. During the ore washing, about 8-10 million tons of slimes containing about 48-60% of pure iron are discarded and wasted every year. In iron making process, it is very important to focus on the reduction of contaminants within the feed material. The contaminants in iron ore can be alumina and silica which has a negative effect on the steel production, since they are of high production costs.
