Permeability of Iron Disulfide and Its Beneficiation Methods
Iron disulfide is the major component of pyrite, and pyrite is a compound of iron and sulfur. Although there is iron in Pyrite, there is no magnetic of pyrite and pyrite are not used as steelmaking raw materials. That is to say iron disulfide has no permeability and conventional magnetic separation method is not workable.
Part of the pyrite has good permeability, which is not actually from pyrite but the magnetite associated with pyrite, this kind pyrite is not actually sulfur iron ore but pyrrhotite. Pure pyrite has no permeability, nor can purified by magnetic beneficiation methods.
The most commoly used beneficiation method for pure pyrite is gravity separation or flotation. Pyrite is usually in the form of coarse crystals disseminated in the ore, need crushing or coarse grinding to get higher degree of monomer dissociation. The proportion of pyrite is much greater than the proportion of gangue, so the gravity separation can be a great choice. Of course, there are also disseminated pyrite, need fine ball grinding to get monomer separation from the gangue.
The fine-grained disseminated pyrite needs the use of flotation beneficiation purification method. However the flotation needs a large investment, high production costs and there are certain environmental pollution, the application of flotation are deceasing. On the contrary, gravity separation is more energy efficient, environmentally friendly and becoming the best pyrite beneficiation methods. The picture below shows the pyrite beneficiation site:
